A pale-yellow, cold-country sweet apple long used for baking, sauce, drying and cider blends.
Tolman Sweet—also written Tolman's Sweeting, Talman Sweet and Tallman Sweeting—is an old American apple whose exact birthplace was already uncertain when James Thacher described it in 1822. Its firm pale fruit and pronounced sweetness kept it useful in northern farm orchards long after many regional varieties disappeared.
Older accounts disagree on whether it arose in Massachusetts, Rhode Island or New York. Every account agrees on what mattered: an admired winter sweet used for eating, baking, sauce, drying and cider.
