West Virginia’s Famous All-Purpose Apple

Golden Delicious apples combine thin golden skin, juicy cream-colored flesh and a mellow sweet flavor with gentle acidity. They are one of the most versatile apples we grow—easy to enjoy fresh and dependable in pies, crisps, sauce, salads and savory recipes.

Golden Delicious fruit may be green-yellow at harvest and deepen toward gold in storage. Natural russeting, freckles, light blush and handling marks are normal; yellow skin often makes cosmetic marks easier to see than they are on red apples.

Golden Delicious Apples
From the Farm to Your Door
  • Pale golden-yellow skin; sometimes a light pink blush.
  • Mild, honey-sweet flavor; crisp and juicy bite.
  • Great for snacking, salads, pies, sauces & cider blends.
  • Discovered in West Virginia (early 1900s); once called “Mullins Yellow Seedling.”
  • Less browning than many apples—nice for fresh slices.

Golden Delicious brings mellow sweetness and a gentle floral aroma. It keeps its shape in bakes and adds natural sweetness to pies—often letting you reduce added sugar. Try blending with Granny Smith for extra tart zip, or compare its easy sweetness to Honeycrisp and Gala.

  • Fresh: snack slices, cheese plates, lunch boxes.
  • Baked: pies, crisps, tarts—holds form and flavor.
  • Savory: chops, grain bowls, salads (less browning).
  • Sauces & Cider: naturally sweet and aromatic.
  • Season: typically late September through mid-October (by region); stores well for months.
  • How to store: Refrigerate in the crisper; keep unwashed in a breathable bag for best texture.
  • Tip: Chill first for maximum crunch and juiciness.

Discovered as a chance seedling in Clay County, West Virginia, in the early 1900s and later renamed “Golden Delicious.” Its familiar sweetness and versatility helped it become one of the world’s most widely enjoyed apples.
