There’s nothing like a homemade apple pie, and it’s easier than it looks once you’ve got the basics down.

Ingredients:
1 double pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
6-7 cups peeled and sliced apples
3/4 cup sugar
2 tbsp flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a pie dish with one crust.
  2. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice until evenly coated.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the crust and dot with the butter.
  4. Cover with the second crust, seal and crimp the edges, and cut a few slits in the top for steam to escape.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce the oven to 350°F and bake for another 35-45 minutes, until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbling.
  6. Let the pie cool for at least 2 hours before slicing so the filling has time to set.

The apple you choose makes a big difference in a good pie — a mix of tart and sweet varieties like Cortland, Mutsu, and Rome usually gives the best flavor and texture. See our full Apple & Pear Varieties Guide for more pie-baking recommendations.
